Clovenfords Hotel

SIR WALTER SCOTT may have been an A-list celebrity in his day, lauded by the great and the good, but it was as a man of the people that earned him respect and affection in his beloved Borders. He may well have laid the foundations for that reputation at the Clovenfords Country Hotel where he lived for a while, after taking up the appointment of Sheriff of Selkirkshire. He continued to be a regular visitor to the inn after buying a house.

The Clovenfords, conveniently located on the road from Galashiels to Peebles, opened its doors as a coaching inn over 250 years ago and has been welcoming visitors ever since.

The Scott connection is celebrated throughout the building with paintings, antiques and curios. Outside an imposing statue of the man gazes across the beautiful Minch Moor and the ever popular Southern Upland Way.

The Clovenfords has six comfortable bedrooms, decorated to a high standard and furnished to make the guest feel completely at home. One twin-bedded double room with en suite bathroom can accommodate wheelchair use.

It’s just the place to come back to and relax after a day out fishing, walking or cycling. For those with more leisurely pursuits in mind, there’s a world of history and Border traditions to explore - and it's only a 40 minute drive to Edinburgh.

In the bar, rugby enthusiasts can find a gallery of shirts that read like a who's who of rugby, including Serge Blanco, Dusty Hare and J P R Williams. And don't be surprised if you find yourself rubbing shoulders with a Scottish International or two.

There are two other eating areas - the Scott Lounge and the Vineyard restaurant, named after the Tweed Vineries that once stood just over the road and and produced 15,000lbs of grapes a season in its heyday.

Whatever your choice you'll chose from a superb menu offering fresh food - even the chips are handmade at the hotel - that is sourced locally and cooked to order.
